Plot: Geoff Foster and Danny Lewis are two schoolboy collectors of militaria. One day Geoff produces a WWII cap badge which he claims the British Museum have been unable to identify. In a quest to trace its origins, Geoff lends Danny the badge to see if his spritualist mother can sense any vibrations. In fact Mrs Lewis succeeds in invoking an eye-patch wearing soldier out of the past, as she herself collapses into a cataleptic trance. Sapphire appears in time to help Danny and, holding the badge, she senses 1943 and a man called Captain Simpson. Researching further, Sapphire and Steel discover that Simpson was part of a secret dept called Unit Zero. Taking herself back to 1943, Sapphire engineers a meeting with Winston Churchill who tells her that Simpson and a Professor Mannix are working on a diabolical weapon and are set to defect to a foreign power with their secret. Simpson, now roaming free in the present day, is attempting to bring Mannix out of the limbo of the continuum to join him - Sapphire decides to risk bringing him out herself. She tricks the plotters by reuniting them in the exact spot where they were killed in 1943. The two die again and history is restored to its proper course.
Comments: A cameo by Winston
Churchill isn't really the stuff of Sapphire
and Steel but it's fun nonetheless. Sapphire and Steel's
assignments always seemed to happen as events were drawing inexorably
towards their conclusion, so it's very odd to see them take
time out to do some flatfoot research at the War Museum and
in an MoD office (and meet up afterwards at a burger bar!).
Some great art as ever from Ranson, but who on earth did the
lettering for issue 8? It looks like it was scribbled
in by a child reader!
