BOOK TWENTY-NINE
Published 1999
BP Team: A bit all over the place.
Ostensibly Simon Thomas, Konnie Huq and Katy Hill, but Matt Baker
just makes it onto the 'Hello There!' page with a profile on page
57 and Stuart Miles is still seen all over the content. There are
some references to Richard Bacon as well, amazingly enough.
Cover:
Katy, Simon and Konnie, with pets Lucy and Mabel (there's an identical
back cover for the first time in many years)
Features: Konnie,
Katy and Stuart travel to Mexico for the expedition and though he's
not mentioned once in the text, Richard is seen in many of the photographs.
Clearly the publishers have never heard of Photoshop... Fact files
on your favourite presenters, all of whom seem to have become pin
ups by this time... A photo feature on Simon's first day on the
show, Friday 8 January 1999... Bonnie is retired from the show having
endured puppies, slippery studio floors and Anthea Turner... Konnie
flies to Bangladesh for a family reunion - she makes the journey
as a flight attendant on a 747 which might just have deflected cries
of anguish from licence payers... The appeal collects aluminium
cans to build schools in Mozambique - the appeal provides 14% of
the aluminium recycled in Britain that year... The team dress up
to time travel into the future of Blue Peter; Katy, aged 137, meets
presenter of BP 2108, Futura (played by Sarah Greene) while Yvette,
Caron, Mark and Sarah come back to take part in a Christmas panto...
An interview with Steps! Egads!... A cartoon board game, The Golden
Presenter... Katy tries motocross racing... 'Dear Blue Peter' -
a new feature shows letters and photos from viewers. These include
three brothers who collect BP Books - they have a Book 2, the lucky
people, and claim "we have got most of them from charity shops for
£1 or less". So you see, it can be done... There are photos from
the show's 40th Birthday party (yet again, Richard is still included)...
Say Hello! to pictures from Katy's wedding day... A Countdown to
the Millenium tells of the Time Capsule buried under the Dome in
1998 and of those previously buried in the BBC garden. These were
of course dug up on January 4th 2000 - the week this site opened!
Makes: A boutique
for your dollies
Make your own Blue Peter dogs; 'for keen collectors of bean-filled
animals'
Historical Figure's Life
Story in Pictures: Not really, for the first time ever, although
there is a feature on the history of Blue Peter's links with the
RNLI lifeboats.
Notes: So the
40th Anniversary book wasn't a one off after all... Book 29 continues
to take this book series into the 21st Century, and there are Blue
Peter features in a CBBC annual also issued for 2000. Publishers
World are now known as Egmont World and look set to carry on the
tradition - an entry for the subsequent Books 30 and 31 will feature
here in later updates.
