THIRTEENTH BOOK
Published 1976
BP Team: Lesley Judd, John Noakes,
Peter Purves (and introducing cats Jack and Jill)
Cover:
Our heroes are dressed for some of the adventures we see inside. John
is a wrestler, Pete dressed for mountain climbing, a rather attractive
Lesley wearing a Bishop Rock lighthouse jersey. For some odd reason
their faces look as if they have been retouched, leaving John and
Pete looking like drag acts.
Features:
Lesley and John stand in as a mother and son (!) team for rehearsals
of The Generation Game with Brucie and Anthea... John visits
the Grassmere Sports day, where he becomes a Cumberland wrestler and
informs us of the importance of a 'full buttock' (it's a wrestling
move)... The annual expo takes the team to Turkey. Lesley gets into
her bikini and John enjoys a soapy massage... John visits the Gladstone
Pottery Museum in an article entitled 'I was a Sagger Maker's Bottom
Knocker'... The team meet Princess Anne and discuss the riding for
the disabled project which benefits from the year's appeal. This sees
the collection of 800 tons of wool and cotton... An obituary to Jason
the cat, who died on Saturday 17 January 1976... John goes canal jumping
with a greasy pole... Special Assignments this year recreate famous
figures including Walter Raleigh, Darwin, Queen Victoria et al. Facial
hair is, of course, ridiculous and from stock... Lesley visits the
Bishop Rock lighthouse - being sent across by rope from a boat, her
harness breaks and she is left holding onto the rope for dear life.
Lesley is accompanied by her director Sarah Hellings, much later to
direct the Doctor Who story Mark of the Rani...
Makes:
Funny Fashion - A rather trim and fit Lesley shows you how to make
a cartoon belt by cutting out pictures from comics and using sticky
backed plastic. It was the 70s. You could probably get away with that
sort of thing.
An expedition tent for your 'soldier doll'
Christmas tat once more - a shiny star thing for your window. Ah,
it was simpler time.
Historical Figure's Life Story in Pictures:
Lord Eglinton - a Scots landowner who hosted a medieval tournament.
Obviously a forerunner to Glastonbury, the event was washed out due
to thundering rain. Where do they find these things?
Stories:
Bleep and Booster and Paddington. Bengo makes a triumphant return
for some reason.
Rubbish Mystery Story:
The Case of the Vanishing Violin
Notes:
Many people's classic line up on the cover means a desirable edition.
Again, harder to find than 9, 10 or 11. Shouldn't be more than £5
top whack though, as indeed is true for anything later than this.
