THE THIRD BOOK OF BLUE PETER
Published 1966
BP Team: Chris
Trace, Valerie Singleton and a young whippersnapper named John Noakes
Cover: Mod era
Blue Peter from the year of Swinging London. Oddly enough of course,
like most Mod icons, the style has persisted so that today's BP logo
for 2000 looks very similar to the one used here.
Features: Petra's
puppies are born on 9 September 1965 while Jason has been busy too
and is now father to two litters of kittens. New parrot Joey is
also profiled (he first appeared on May 23rd 1966)... John takes
a trip to the Royal Mint... Loads of magic tricks to amaze and amuse
your friends... Chris visits Pam Phillips, make up girl, who makes
him into a 'characteristically inscrutable' Fu Manchu-like Chinaman.
The ad for the make up girl reads: "Wanted: trainee make up girls
(sexist) for BBC TV. Must be British subjects (racist) over 21 (ageist)"!
... Some model trains. This was the age of the train.
Makes: Chris
sets up 'a layout', or foldaway farm
A cut-out theatre.
Toothbrush holders made from squeezy bottles and bits of foam.
Teeth-rotting Sugar snowmen and pink mice made from egg and icing
sugar. That's what the toothbrush holders will be needed for then.
Historical Figure's Life Story in Pictures:
Escapologist Houdini and the tales of prospectors
and pioneers in the American West are told in a text/pictures mix.
Stories: Bleep
and Booster travel to a world of dinosaurs and huge golden tortoises
Meanwhile Paddington wins the Christmas Cake Competition and travels
to make an appearance on TV's Blue Peter!
Silly old Bengo's in colour.
Rubbish Mystery Story: The
Case of the Burgling Boxer
Notes: Another
book from another time. You'd think rationing was still on, so low
key is this effort. Well designed for its time but overall it suffers
from too many pages given over to makes, puzzles, crosswords and
other 'activity book' filler material. Hard to believe there are
80 pages in this. Shows how little Blue Peter was still able to
report from the outside world at this time. All of the first three
books are very rare and this is really the only one you have a realistic
chance of finding. Even if you do find it, condition becomes an
issue - it is very hard indeed to find a copy that isn't drawn on
(all those puzzles you see), bowed or with a broken or missing spine
and this greatly affects the price. You could be talking anywhere
between £1 for a damaged, no-spine copy to £20 for a Book 3 in mint
condition. A good (not mint) copy was recently spotted for £26.99
and in our opinion this is madness! Good luck!
